Orthwein Home
This passive solar home was designed by Thomas Brown, a Stevens Point architect, and in 1987, was the first home built by Gimme Shelter. Its outward Victorian styling cloaks a passive solar, super insulated, high performance home for the 21st century.
Solid wood floors have a substantial amount of mass that can act as a heat sink for passive solar gain.
This large bank of south windows allows sunshine to radiate directly onto a marble covered, thin slab of concrete for maximum passive solar storage.
An upper level walk-out screen porch opens directly off the master bedroom.
View from the top of the stairs showing the marble covered thin slab.
Site-built oak stairs continue the aesthetic theme.
