Lake Lucerne Camp & Retreat Center: New Youth Center
Jeremy Liszewski, of Gimme Shelter, installs the main entry double-door.
Matt Stellner, from Gimme Shelter, places rubber tubing on the frozen ground. The tubing will then be covered with insulated blankets and hot antifreeze will be run through the tubes to thaw the ground.
This is the tubing for the in-floor radiant heat. You can see the electric floor outlets on the left side of this picture. This North Common floor will feature a labyrinth design in the surface of the 4" thick concrete poured over this tubing.
Wisconsin Valley Concrete Products provides the redi-mix for the floors of the New Youth Center.
Almost done pouring 5,000 square feet of floor makes for a smiling face of Judah, and Alchemy Concrete crew! (sorry so blurry)
Jeff Steinmetz, of Gimme Shelter, is working on the south gable exterior on a bluebird day in mid-April.
Matt Stellner and John Brown, of Gimme Shelter, are probably talking about the building, but I think maybe they are talking about pizza.
We have started to see the color combinations come together here: Slate Gray Roof, Cornsilk Soffit and Brandywine Red Fascia by Rollex, Country Lane Red fiber cement window trim from James Hardie, along with the tan exterior on the Pella Windows. The siding will eventually be Autumn Tan fiber cement lap siding from James Hardie.
We have hung a temporary vapor barrier on the ceiling, and removed the frost from the ground with a "Thawzall" unit from Farrell Equipment from Wausau, WI. Kerschner Gas Service from Coloma, WI is providing temporary heat for the building, so that "sub-slab" plumbing drains (foreground-right) can be installed by Wagner Plubing from Wautoma, WI.

Dave Shantz, from Gimme Shelter, checks the window opening for plumb and level before installing the custom fixed-glass Impervia windows from Pella.
The custom sized windows are in and Golke Construction, LLC has nearly completed the steel roofing on the "complete gable return".
Golke Construction, LLC, of Waupaca WI, has covered the roof deck with Titanium PSU-30 synthetic roofing under-layment. We are starting to prep for the window install. Obdyke "Homeslicker Plus Typar" rainscreen / water resistive barrier will allow any moisture trapped between the siding and sheathing to be eliminated.
The Pella Impervia Windows have arrived at the jobsite. We ordered them with 8-3/8" deep pre-finished clear pine extension jambs to fit our 7" thick strapped wall system.
A southwest view shows the 250 square feet of south facing window and door openings. The glass in these windows and doors will have a High Passive Solar Heat Gain Coefficient to allow more solar energy into the building during the heating season. (photo submitted by Tom Brown)
Northeast view of the New Youth Center. For state plan approval, the structural engineer required diagonal ship lap sheathing on some walls of the building, along with some specialized framing and special anchor bolts into the concrete. These "shear walls" will keep the building from twisting in strong winds. (photo submited by Tom Brown)
Almost all of the trusses are up. Completion of the roof sheathing with solid pine "shiplap" from Menominee Tribal Enterprises will follow. (Photo submitted by Tom Brown)
With Bob, from Bushman Crane Serice, at the crane controls, a gable end section, pre-assembled on the ground, is carefully lifted inot place on the southwest sleeping wing. Bob says this section weighs 3,120#'s. (photo submitted by Tom Brown)
After the gable sections are in place, the remainder of the trusses over the south common space are craned onto the top plates on a snowy day. (Photo submitted by Tom Brown)
The exterior and bearing wall framing complete, we are ready for the "Tall Wall" and truss package delivery from Feltz Lumber of Stevens Point. (Photo submitted by Tom Brown).
GSC rents "the sunchaser" from the MREA located in Custer, WI. It will provide all the electricity required to power saws, air compressors, until the electrical service is trenched to the building. Photovoltaic panels on top and a bank of batteries and inverters inside convert the sunlight to the AC power required. *click on this pic to see larger view, use mouse to hover on right side of pic to arrow forward*
Tom Brown, the Architect; Mark Dostal from Gimme Shelter; Travis from the Lake Lucerne Camp, dial in the south-facing orientation of the layout for the building.
Hudziak Excavating, of Wild Rose, WI digs the basement under the center section of the Youth Center.
John Brown, of Gimme Shelter, and Mike McGibbon, of Alchemy Concrete, locate the pads that will be under the posts that will support the first floor deck.
The southeast view of the complete foundation back-filled, and compacted. The first floor deck over the basement is complete, and we are ready to start framing the exterior walls.
Jeff Steinmetz, of Gimme Shelter, uses the Skytrax to haul completed exterior wall sections to their appropriate locations.
The basement will house the mechanical systems.
Alchemy Concrete Inc., from Nelsonville, WI, placing the forms for the footings for the two sleeping wings and the south common area of the New Youth Center.
Dave Hudziak, of Hudziak Excavation, from Wild Rose, WI, excavates for the footings and frostwalls of the north common space for the New Youth Center. *click on this pic to see larger view, use mouse to hover on right side of pic to arrow forward*
Installation of the basement sub-slab gravel bed and tubing for radon mitigation.
Alchemy Concrete, Inc. pouring the 825 square foot basement, which will be used for Mechanical Systems.
Alchemy Concrete, Inc. pumping the concrete into the forms for the basement walls.
Site clearing provided pulpwood and lumber for paneling that will be used inside the New Youth Center.
